The Reality of The Liminal Space

There’s a name for the “in between” space we sometimes find ourselves within: the liminal space.

That sounds much prettier and cleaner than it actually often feels. Liminal instead of the messy incomprehensible terrifying unknown. Yeah, liminal sounds a lot cleaner.

It’s the middle of the night and I’m awake. Writing as usual when I can’t sleep. There may or may not be music playing loudly.

I actually have TONS of notes about this liminal space and the opportunities it inevitably holds within it. The reality is that it often feels like walking through a dense fog where the next step is literally all that’s feasible and even that feels incomprehensibly uncertain.

Sometimes that next step is all we can do. Sometimes it’s all we need to do. Sometimes that step is enough. The mess of the in between is a no mans land and that’s ok. We’ve literally left a land familiar but one we’ve outgrown. We’ve stepped into territory blindingly unfamiliar.

It takes a minute for our eyes to adjust. It can take a minute (or more) for us to see that next right step.

The gifts that I know for a fact from experience are within this liminal space in between? Wisdom, beauty, unimaginable bliss, joy, laughter, connection. I’ve navigated so many damn liminal spaces I’ve lost count. Apparently I’m not done navigating them. And really, that’s more than ok.

I’d always rather keep reaching, growing and learning. As uncomfortable as that can be for me in the moment, it’s the path I have chosen and apparently continue to choose to navigate.
