A First House is Sometimes Like a First Husband

In some cases the first home you buy may share some things in common with a first husband:

  • It’s a lesson not a long term match
  • It seemed okay at the time but turns out later you just ignored the red flags
  • You’ll never EVER want to live there again once you move on
  • It was a superficial connection without depth, looked good from afar but living within it turned out to be a different story
  • It’ll offer you valuable wisdom to take with you on your journey

In my case all of those are very much true of both my first home and my ex husband. Oh, the irony 🙂

My first house was one I settled for and I knew it but went along with buying it anyway. Most of my clients end up hearing this story as it’s part of why I got into real estate and am so passionate about working with home buyers.

The day we were signing the offer I stood in the house looking around and it just didn’t feel right. But, we were up against a deadline and had lost out on several other houses for various reasons.

Our agent was of course with me and when I expressed reservations she became exasperated and said “well fine then, I guess we’ll just keep looking”. So I ignored the voice within me saying “no, this isn’t the one” and signed.

I NEVER want a client of mine to feel pressured in any way to make a decision they don’t feel right about. EVER. I know firsthand they’ll regret settling and saying yes when they wanted to say no.

With the perspective of hindsight, my marriage turned out just as joyless as that first house and was indeed a lesson much more than any meaningful connection or relationship.

Wisdom indeed, and some that I share with all buyers and especially first time home buyer clients……if something doesn’t feel right, trust that and speak up. Same certainly goes for getting married as well!

Did you love your first home or was it more of a lesson? I’d love to hear from you!

All the Best,

Diane
