Have you ever cried about a client? I’ll admit that I have and I’m not ashamed of it.
Go ahead and say there’s no crying in real estate or that’s unprofessional, too emotional, weak. Whatever.
I’ve always said and still say this business comes down to people. Real people, with real lives. To me clients aren’t numbers, stats or cold hard data. People are at the heart of what we do as real estate brokers.
We get to know them, meet their families, laugh with them, listen to them, spend time with them.
Several years ago I met Sam and his wife. They have family in the area and have long been planning on eventually moving here themselves. For reasons outside their control the move was postponed but they were getting closer.
I’d meet them on some of their visits here and got a chance to spend time getting to know them. Truly lovely people. The kind that just effortlessly inspire respect, trust and are just plain easy to be around. A joy. Really.
Well, except for the fact that Sam had an uncanny knack for finding snakes and other wildlife at property – the snakes made me want to run for the car though I never actually did 🙂
This week I got a call from Sam’s daughter and learned he was killed in an accident a few weeks ago. And it brought me to tears.
I’m not ashamed to admit I’ve cried about a client – because he was more than that. He was a good guy who ADORED his family and who was just down to earth and a pleasure to be around.
Sam – I know you’ll never read this but hope you knew that you did matter and make a difference to those you encountered. You had my respect and still do. You will be remembered.
To your family, I can only say how truly and deeply sorry I am for your loss – wishing you comfort and peace at this difficult time.
So you can say there’s no crying in real estate but there is in real life and that’s tied so intricately into what it is we do, it’s kind of impossible to completely separate the two.
