In general, it’s a good idea to check what’s on your credit report at least annually. The official website to access free copies of your credit report is at Annual Credit Report.
While other sites may offer copies of your credit report, the Annual Credit Report site is the only official site to access your credit report. Some of the other websites require enrollment in a credit monitoring service and although they have a disclaimer that they’re not affiliated with the annual credit report program it’s easy to miss that disclaimer.
You’re able to receive a copy of your credit report from each of the three national credit reporting agencies and can receive all three at the same time or check each one separately.
These credit reports won’t include a credit score (that’s available only by purchasing it) but they will show how your current and past debts are reporting. This is important because if there’s information that isn’t accurate or updated it can impact your credit score – and therefore your credit risk rating with lenders.
For home buyers, it’s especially important to know what’s on your credit report since lenders will review your credit report to pre-approve and qualify you for a loan. When buying a Charlotte NC home pre-approval is a must so knowing what’s on your credit report is also important.
If there’s information that needs to be corrected, you’ll have a chance to dispute and get it corrected before it becomes a stumbling block to getting a mortgage. This is important because the dispute process can take some time and there may be a lag between when you dispute an item and when it’s resolved and updated on your credit report.
So if you haven’t checked your credit report lately (or ever), visit Annual Credit Report to see what your credit report is saying about you.
